Har ki Dun Trek Guide



Both treks are situated under the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary belt. A pleasant opportunity to discover the fauna and flora. There is a great range of medicinal plants in the valley of Har ki Doon. Whereas, only pines and rhododendrons and lush meadows have Kedarkantha. Many Himalayan birds can be seen, such as Redstart, Rosefinch, Monal, and bearded vulture. It is easy to spot animals such as black bears, snow leopards, wild boars and musk deer.


At the base of Fateh Parvat, HAR KI DUN lies at an elevation of 3,566 meters above sea level. One of the famous trekking destinations in Uttarakhand is the Har ki dun trek. The trek takes you to the thick pine forests and glittering peaks of the mountains. For bird watchers, it is a paradise as it is nestled in the Govind National Park. In the far off lands of the Garhwal Himalayas, the valley offers captivating untouched valleys.


You walk along the playful, sparkling, blooming streams and waterfalls. The landscapes are becoming more mesmerizing with every step.


Har ki Dun is a must-have experience and is on every trekker's list. The trek is considered easy to moderate and recommended both for beginners and for experienced people.


The trail will take you to the beautiful Jaundhar Glacier, passing through so many hamlets and small villages, such as Taluka, Osla, Seema. At Har Ki Dun, you have an opportunity to relax and chill or choose to hike further to Jaundhar Glacier or Maninda Tal.


How to reach?


By Air: Jolly Grant Airport, in Dehradun, is the closest airport. The distance to Sankri from Dehradun is 230 km, which can be covered by taxi.


By Road: The major cities of Garhwal, such as Dehradun, Mussorie, Purola, and Mori, are well linked to Sankri.


By Rail: Dehradun is the closest railway station. Other towns, such as Mussorie, Purola and Mori, are well linked to Sankri.


Basecamp:


Sankri is the base camp for the Har ki Dun trek. Sankri is a small hamlet in the district of Uttarakashi, and trekkers love it. The village provides captivating views of the skyline of the Himalayas and a lot of peaks of mountains staring at you. You'll have magnificent mountains in the distance, gushing rivers flowing along your side, lofty pine forests that make your journey a memorable one.


You can pass through villages like Taluka during this trek. A picturesque little hamlet, located 12 km from Sankri. Your attention will be grabbed by a cluster of wooden houses and you will see diverse flora and fauna.


In addition, this trek will take you to another lovely village, Osla. Osla is located on a sloping peak, surrounded by apple trees. The village is situated 26 km from the town of Taluka. The trek will take you all the way to Har Ki Dun.


Best time to visit:


It is best to visit the valley in winter, as you can appreciate the place's serenity and solitude. The valley is best during the winter season, with snowfall.


The place looks good in the summers and there is no fog, the sky remains bright much of the time. If you intend to trek in the summers, do not forget to wear woolen clothes as the night temperature drops.


The area receives heavy rainfall in the monsoons. As the ground becomes muddy and slippery, it is advisable to stop hiking. Due to landslides, roads remain blocked.


Elevation points:


The Har Ki Dun trekking starts in Dehradun and takes you on a thrilling drive to Sankri's base camp. The journey will take you to the enchanting beauty of Purola, Nainbagh, and other places. Sankri is located at an altitude of 1950 meters and provides picturesque Himalayan views. Trekking to the magical village of Taluka, perched at an altitude of 2075 meters from here. In addition, with its beautifully decorated temples, the trek to Osla stands at 2560 meters. After that, at 3556 meters, a trek to meet Har ki Dun will make your trip worth remembering.
